Newborn Photography Session Info

I want this to be a relaxed and easy experience for you. As a mum I understand how getting out of the house and feeling “photo ready” can be daunting in those early weeks with a brand-new baby. While your little one is having their photos taken all you need to do is sit back and rest, enjoy a cuppa and choccy. I have plenty of patience and confidence handling and soothing babies, and I don't have sleep deprivation to deal with!

The ideal time for newborn photography is when baby is between 5-15 days old. After 15 days of age they are not as curly & squishy for those modern sleepy poses, after those first 15 days you would expect more ‘lifestyle’ type images, this would involve more awake, wrapped and parent holding images. This is why it is so important to please contact me as early as possible in your pregnancy and I will pencil you in 7 days after your due date – (this is just a rough date to ensure your booked and is flexible either side).  Please note, At the time of booking your session you will be required to pay a non refundable deposit.

Welcome to the studio.

The studio will be warmed for your arrival, for adults, this can be almost an uncomfortable warmth but perfect for baby. I suggest you come dressed in light and comfortable clothing, or at least something of that nature to change into after your family shots. As our Sessions can last up to 3 hours, I encourage my clients not to plan anything else for that day.

Preparation.

Everything is provided for your session – plenty of wipes, waterproof wraps for feeding and changing, and some spare props in case of soiling. Your little one will be without a nappy for majority of the session so mess is expected and perfectly normal. Before you arrive, I will put together several different setups, these can be based on your color/tone requests or you can leave me to create something unique for you. You are most welcome to bring along a special blanket, toy, hat etc. to incorporate into your baby's photos. If you have anything specific in mind, It helps if you can let me know beforehand so I can be prepared.

The Process.

A newborn portrait session usually takes around 2-3 hours (more or less). This allows us plenty of time to feed and settle baby to sleep. Once bub is in position, a range of photos can be taken with minimal disturbance.

I work with an assistant for all my newborn sessions. This means...
- You can relax and enjoy watching your baby's photos being created;
- I have a second set of hands for Safety, Soothing; and,
- I can be ready to shoot the moment my assistant's hands are taken away.

My experienced assistants can mean the difference between getting the shot and starting the settling process over again – which makes the session quicker and less tiring for you and bub. The safety and comfort of your baby is my highest priority. We are both also upto date with all current vaccinations including whooping cough.

Siblings & Family

Family is a huge part of what I do. Babies are precious, and make for gorgeous photos. But their place within your family is just as important. Older siblings are always more than welcome & encouraged. We usually try to capture sibling shots at the start of the session while the older kids are more relaxed and cooperative. Once sibling shots are done, I suggest we do the whole Family & then either a parent or grandparent can take the kids off for a play at a park over the road or even back home if that’s suitable.  This saves toddlers from long waits and avoids too much noise disturbing your newborn during their individual photos.
